Climate Rebellion & Deep Adaptation (2020 Summer Replay)

Should we tell young people what we’ve done to the climate? Too late: they are telling us. From the climate talks in Katowice Poland, the student rebel who started it all: Greta Thunberg, interviewed by Stuart Scott from scientistswarning.org. From Australia to Canada young people are walking out, protesting a system designed for extinction. Then Dr. Jem Bendell a well-known Sustainability Professor from Britain walks out on green fantasy to tell us: change your plans. Climate change will collapse this system within ten years.

WHEN CLOUDS CANNOT CONTINUE – THE GREAT WARMING (2020 Summer Replay)

At cloud doomsday Earth’s temperature soars 8 degrees C, 14 degrees Fahrenheit. We hope that will never come, but if we go there, that is the end. New science from the lead author, Tapio Schneider at NASA. Then from the Post Carbon Institute, Jason Bradford predicts the tide of humans into cities will reverse. The future is food, and local – and we can prepare now for the end of fossil fuels and continuing climate threats.

HEAT STROKE: When Heat Kills (2020 Summer Replay)

While we keep pumping up greenhouse gases, and the economy staggers toward the exits, could it get so hot that large parts of the heavily inhabited Earth would have to be abandoned? I ask two popular bloggers, John Cook of “Skeptical Science” & Stuart Staniford of “Early Warning”: why are most of the public blissfully unaware of how heat kills? Scientist Mark Moffett tells how ants adapt to climate. Will ants form the next civilization – after us? [Radio Ecoshock June 11, 2010]Song clips: Bryan Adams “In the Heat of the Night”

Heading to Air-Conditioned Hell (2020 Summer Replay)

A billion humans are already on the ventilator, breathing machine-driven air. As we’ll discover in the next three interviews, air-conditioning isn’t sustainable, and only makes the world hotter and hotter.  This as America enters uncharted territory for pandemics, especially in the South, where it’s very hot, well over 100 degrees F, or 38 C. A rare dust storm from the Sahara added more respiratory problems to millions of lungs already in danger from COVID-19.  In a Woods Hole seminar last week, American scientist Zach Zobel projected U.S southern states will go well beyond the zone where humans can survive outside.  No problem: everyone goes inside with air-conditioning – as long as the grid stays up. If the power goes out for more than a week or so, millions could flee north. This is a best of Radio Ecoshock replay.

And now we know A/C may contribute heavily to massive infection in the American South (says Harvard U.)

Guests from this 2012 show include Stan Cox, author of “Losing Our Cool”, Guus Velders, Netherlands Environment Agency, expert on ozone and climate, and Michael Sivak, from the University of Michigan.
