Oprah Climate Show Review
Just when you think America has gone comatose, lurching toward a climate hostile to life -
Surprise!
An unexpected pair of celebrities break out of the corporate media mold. Movie star Leonardo DiCaprio and afternoon talk show Queen, Oprah Winfrey laid out the case for climate change, for millions and millions of Americans.
From comments in the show, Winfrey awakened to the impending climate shift, due to the hurricanes that devastated the African American community in New Orleans. She may have been helped by celebrity friends.
The October 27th show featured clips from DiCaprio's self-directed film on Global Warming, from the World Wildlife Fund, plus original montages and short documentaries woven into the program. The celebrity pair were joined by Professor Michael Oppenheimer, of Princeton University. The professor patiently explained the role Americans play, producing 25 per cent of all greenhouse gases.
The program then turned to the first steps, some easy solutions viewers could take. DiCaprio stood by a rushing highway to explain the dirty truth about car pollution, then visited a car lot to show hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius and the converted Honda.
Major television is partly bankrolled by car advertising. But Oprah has been attacked by major corporate giants before, by the beef industry. She won the lawsuit. In a breakthrough moment, the Oprah show lists, by name, the five worst climate automobiles, all of them SUV's and mostly American made. Oprah admits she owns one of them. DiCaprio says she must change.
The Oprah Winfrey Show is aimed mainly at women. It sits comfortably in the top ratings. We cannot discount the power of shopping choices, family budget control, and increasing female leadership in the American economy, and society at large. Nor should we forget, most of the humane social change we have managed, from the early 1800s to the present, have been founded, and moved by women. From the anti-slavery movement, to the late Rosa Parks, women have struggled to correct the damages in male-dominated civilizations.
Today men struggle against the reality of our own pollution. If the climate can be saved, the women of the world might demand it, and make it so.
