Tom Hayden – Birth of Movements
Original recording by Alex Smith in Vancouver, Canada July 3rd, 2008. New to Radio Ecoshock.

There are undercurrents of new movements in many countries. When and how does social change arise? On July 3rd, 2008 I recorded this speech by legendary American activist Tom Hayden. The speech was broadcast in Vancouver, but this is it’s first appearance on Radio Ecoshock. I call it “Birth of Movements”.

With Trump and Sanders, or new parties in Europe, this 2008 speech by California activist Tom Hayden is important. Hayden was a founder of Students for a Democratic Society in the 60’s, was one of the Chicago Seven, and with his wife Jane Fonda was an early environmental activist. I recorded this speech at the University of British Columbia, following student protests there.

In the second interview, think Zika virus moving northwards into America, as tropical mosquitoes find new ground in a warming world. All the insects will respond to climate change. We may not like the result. Dr. Daniel Brooks is one of the few expert scientists who track those trends.
